How to get a stamped bank statement from ABSA

ABSA issues official stamped statements through its banking app and online banking — a digital version that most institutions accept in place of a branch-stamped document. This guide covers how to get one, what ABSA's digital stamp looks like, and how to handle the cases where an ink stamp is still required.

Does an ABSA digital statement count as stamped?

For most purposes, yes. ABSA statements downloaded through the ABSA Banking App or ABSA Online include:

  • ABSA's official letterhead and branding on every page
  • Your full name, account number, and account type
  • The date range and statement generation date
  • A statement reference number

ABSA refers to this as a digitally verified statement. The combination of official letterhead, account details, and reference number satisfies most institutions — including visa centres, rental agencies, home loan applications, and most government departments.

Where a physical ink stamp is required, see the branch section below.

How to get a stamped ABSA statement via the app

  1. Open the ABSA Banking App and sign in
  2. Tap Accounts and select the relevant account
  3. Tap Statements
  4. Choose the date range — select the last 3 months if you are unsure what is needed
  5. Tap Download or Send to email
  6. Save or share the original PDF file

If you email it to yourself and then forward that email, the PDF remains intact. What breaks the document is printing it to paper and scanning it back — that produces an image file, not the original PDF.

How to get a stamped ABSA statement via online banking

  1. Log in to ABSA Online at absa.co.za
  2. Click on your account
  3. Click Statements
  4. Set the date range and click Generate statement
  5. Click Download PDF

The downloaded PDF is the official document. ABSA online banking allows you to download statements going back 12 months directly. For older history, use the historical statement request process.

Requesting older ABSA statements

ABSA digital channels typically show 12 months of history. For older statements:

  1. Log in to ABSA Online
  2. Go to StatementsRequest a statement
  3. Select a custom date range beyond 12 months
  4. ABSA processes the request and delivers it by email, usually within 2 business days

Historical statement fees apply depending on your account type and statement age.

ABSA e-stamp

ABSA uses the term e-stamp informally for the digital verification embedded in statements produced through their official channels. The e-stamp is not a visible ink stamp graphic — it refers to the document's authenticity attributes: official letterhead, digital generation, and reference number. If an institution asks whether your ABSA statement has an e-stamp, the answer is yes — provided the PDF was downloaded directly from the ABSA app or online banking.

Getting an ABSA statement at an ATM

ABSA ATMs and self-service kiosks can print account statements on demand. The document is produced by ABSA's systems and carries official ABSA branding — most institutions treat it the same as a branch-printed statement for standard purposes like rental applications and bank confirmation letters.

What to expect at an ABSA ATM:

  1. Insert your card and enter your PIN
  2. Select Other services or Statements from the menu (varies by ATM model)
  3. Choose the account and date range
  4. The ATM prints the statement on official ABSA paper

Limitations:

  • Coverage is typically the last 3 months — useful for most standard applications
  • The statement is printed in thermal format at some ATMs; if the institution needs an ink-stamped original, a branch visit is still required
  • Not all ABSA ATMs support full statement printing — if the option is not visible, use a self-service kiosk at an ABSA branch

Getting a branch-stamped ABSA statement

If the institution requires a physical ink stamp:

  1. Visit any ABSA branch with your original ID document (smart card, green ID book, or passport)
  2. Go to the customer service or enquiries desk
  3. Request a printed and stamped statement for the required date range
  4. Branch staff will print the statement and apply the physical ABSA stamp
  5. A fee applies per printed statement — confirm the current rate at the counter

Branches carry statements going back several years. For statements more than 2 years old, call ABSA's client service line (0860 008 600) before visiting to confirm they can be retrieved.

Common reasons ABSA statements are rejected

Re-saved PDFs. The only accepted PDF is the one downloaded from ABSA's official channel. Opening the PDF in Preview or Adobe and then exporting a copy can strip embedded metadata.

Incomplete date range. If the requesting institution needs 3 months of history and your statement only covers 2 months and 20 days, it will be flagged. Always add a few extra days buffer on the start date.

Account type mismatch. A cheque account statement will not satisfy a requirement for a business account statement, even if the account belongs to you personally.

Statement without transactions. A mini statement or balance inquiry print-out is not a bank statement. Make sure the PDF shows all individual transactions and the running balance.

Businesses collecting ABSA statements from clients

If your business receives ABSA statements from customers or tenants regularly, manual collection via email or WhatsApp creates risk — documents can be edited, pages can be omitted, and chasing is time-consuming. BankLink allows the ABSA account holder to link their account directly, so their transactions flow to you on a schedule without manual uploads.
